Frequently asked questions
-
No. You do not need a GP referral or Mental Health Care Plan to book a session. You can contact me directly and begin when it feels right for you. Some parents are referred by their GP, psychologist, school counsellor, or another professional, but many simply reach out themselves. If another professional is already involved in your care or your child’s care, I am happy to work collaboratively with them where appropriate and with your consent.escription

No — Medicare rebates are only available through psychologists and psychiatrists. However, what many people don't realise is that even under Medicare, there is usually still a gap fee to pay when seeing a psychologist. My fee is similar to that gap, making counselling a genuinely cost-effective option — and often a more accessible one too. There's no GP referral needed, no Mental Health Care Plan to organise, and no limit on the number of sessions we can have together.

Counselling is not only for crisis. It is for the slow grind of a life that has stopped feeling manageable, and for the parent who wants to be more present, more regulated, and more connected than they currently are.

Yes — and this is often when it matters most. Your child has their own therapeutic support. This is yours. I help you understand what your child is working through, translate therapeutic goals into what they look like at home, and have your own space for what you’re carrying. The two don’t overlap — they work together. I am always happy to coordinate with the treating psychologist with your consent.

A parenting course gives you information and strategies. This gives you a relationship — a space where your specific situation, your specific child, and your specific history are understood and worked with over time. The strategies we develop come from that understanding. They fit your child and your family, not a generic template. And alongside the practical guidance, you have genuine therapeutic support for your own experience.

Each session lasts 50 minutes, and are usually weekly or fortnightly to start. Some parents find significant clarity and relief within a few months. Others find the work valuable over a longer period, particularly if they are doing deeper personal work alongside the practical parenting focus. There are no session limits. We review progress regularly and you are always in charge of the pace.

Yes. Online sessions are available and parents often find this flexibiliy helpful around family life.

No. My work is entirely focused on the parent. I don’t provide therapy to children. What I do is help you understand your child, their nervous system, their emotional needs, what their behaviour is communicating, and build your capacity to be what they need. In practice, this often has a more significant impact on a child than individual child therapy alone, because it changes the environment the child lives in every day.
