Frequently asked questions
-
No, you don't need a referral of any kind to get started. You can contact me directly and book when it feels right for you.
Some parents are referred by their GP, school counsellor or another professional, but many simply reach out on their own. If someone else is already supporting you or your child, I'm happy to work alongside them where it's helpful and with your consent.
-
No, Medicare rebates aren't available for counselling — these are only accessible through psychologists and psychiatrists. But it's worth knowing that even with Medicare, most people still pay a gap fee when seeing a psychologist.
My fee is similar to that gap, which makes counselling a genuinely cost-effective option, and often a more accessible one. There's no GP referral needed, no Mental Health Care Plan to organise, and no limit on the number of sessions we can have together.
If you’re unsure whether counselling or psychology is the right level of support, you can read more about the difference between the two.

No — my work is focused entirely on you as the parent. I don't provide therapy to children directly.
What I do is help you understand your child: what their behaviour is communicating, what they need emotionally, and how to respond in ways that make a real difference. In practice, this often has a more significant impact than individual child therapy alone, because it changes the environment your child lives in every day.
-
Yes, and this is often when it matters most. Your child has their own therapeutic support. This is yours. I help you understand what your child is working through, translate therapeutic goals into what they look like at home, and have your own space for what you’re carrying. The two don’t overlap. They work together. I am always happy to coordinate with the treating psychologist or therapist with your consent. Find out more here about how parent counselling can compliment your child’s therapy.

Counselling is not only for crisis. It is for the slow grind of a life that has stopped feeling manageable, and for the parent who wants to be more present, more regulated, and more connected than they currently are. You can find out more here about some of the experiences parent counselling can support.

A parenting course gives you information and strategies. This gives you a relationship. A space where your specific situation, your specific child, and your specific history are understood and worked with over time. The strategies we develop come from that understanding. They fit your child and your family, not a generic template. And alongside the practical guidance, you have genuine therapeutic support for your own experience.

Each session lasts 50 minutes, and are usually weekly or fortnightly to start. Many parents find significant benefit within four to six sessions. Others find the work valuable over a longer period, particularly if they are doing deeper personal work alongside the practical parenting focus. There are no session limits. We review progress regularly and you are always in charge of the pace.

Yes. Online sessions are available, and many parents find this flexibility helpful around family life. In-person sessions are also available in Mount Colah.
